Student Benefits
BACKGROUND
Among the 700 SAJA members are more than 70 students. As with our professional membership, SAJA is open only to those living in the United States and Canada. Unlike our pros, students do not have to be involved full-time with journalism. They only need to demonstrate an interest in the field. Almost all of our student members are either enrolled in graduate/undergraduate/high school journalism programs, work for the school papers/broadcast stations or have held (or are applying for) internship positions.
SIGNING UP
Students may apply for membership by going to our membership page. Membership is $10 a year.
CAREER SERVICES
A group of experienced SAJA professionals serve as mentors for student members, providing career counseling and help with internship/job searches.
AWARDS
As part of the annual SAJA Journalism Awards, we present an award for "Outstanding story on any subject by a South Asian student in the US or Canada" (print/broadcast/new media). Stories produced for school publications/broadcasts & class work are eligible. (plaques for winners; certificates for two finalists)
- 1st place: $300
- 2nd place: $200
- 3rd place: $100
E-MAIL MAILING LISTS
Student members are also encouraged to sign up for the free SAJA e-mail discussion list (175+ journalists in 13 countries discussing the media, South Asia and the South Asian diaspora). Sign up.
Please do not hesitate to contact us. We are committed to increasing the number of South Asian student journalists and increasing the number of South Asians who enter the profession. We need your help to succeed.
